QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Q: What is the best way to protect fine hair from bleaching (i.e. highlight damage), besides not highlighting?
A: Dear Dream the Impossible Dream,
Hmm, sounds like you already know the answer (smiling). But, I'll offer points to ponder: 1) use Blonde Icing Conditioning Cream Lightener Ammonia Free mixed with 20 volume developer (1:3 ratio), 2) try Redken Up to 7 De-dusted Lightener with 10 volume, 3) apply highlights to the fine-haired area last, 4) reduce processing time; or 5) switch to a Color Fusion level 9 or 10 shade or Double Blonde.
Highlighting with a lightener is all about 'damage control'. No matter how conditioning the Redken decolorizer (and they are), it’s up to you to control strength, timing and application; and properly assess texture, condition and porosity. Remember, it’s "the pilot not the airplane"...so don't let the passengers bully you into blonde!
Happy Coloring, David
