Styling Tips

need help using a blow dryer, flat-iron or curling iron? These pro tips will help you get runway-ready results at home

Pick the right brush for blow-drying

In this case, one size doesn't fit all!  Choose a large round brush to straighten long, coarse or curly hair; a medium-size one to add body and smoothness to medium-to-long hair; or small one to give short hair a volume boost.

Use a nozzle - or diffuser - with your blow dryer

These attachments can make the difference between a good blow-dry and a great one! A nozzle directs air-flow to give you a smoother blow-dry and a diffuser allows you to dry curly or wavy hair without causing frizz.

Section hair before your style

Ever wonder why professional hairstyles look so good? One reason is that stylists take time to divide hair into sections first. Use clips to section off your hair, so you can work in a neat, controlled manner - just like your stylist.

Make sure hair's 100% dry

Before you use a flat-iron, curling iron or any other hot tool, make sure hair is thoroughly dried - otherwise, the heat can cause damage. The one exception: wet-to-dry-flat-irons, which are specifically designd to be used on damp hair.

Tuck those ends under

Make sure the very tip of your hair is tucked into your curling-iron before you roll it up. Otherwise, you'll hend up with what stylists all a "fishhook" - a small section that's bent backwards.

Keep your flat-iron moving

Move your flat-iron down each section in smooth passes with medium pressure. Starting and stopping, as a well as pressing too hard, can leave "dents" in your hair.

Place hot rollers the right way
If you want to add volume and wave, lift your section up, place the roller underneath the section and roll down toward your scalp. For waves with minimal volume, leave your sections directed downward, place the rollr on top of the section and roller up.

Shine:

  • When hair is healthy, it has a natural shine.  Get yours in shape by doing a weekly deep conditioning treatment – ask your Redken stylist which treatment is right for you.
  • Get maximum shine out of every blow-dry by applying a silicone-based product like glass 01 to damp hair before you dry.
  • Give hair extra gloss by applying outshine 01 to damp hair, blow-drying then misting on vinyl glam 02 – concentrate on the ends, where hair tends to look dullest.

Texture

  • Apply a small amount of any Texture product to damp or dry hair.
  • Always warm up waxes and pomades in your hands first – it makes them easier to spread through hair.
  • Make sure you don’t apply too much wax or pomade by lightly smoothing it over your top layer only, then working it through the rest of your hair.
  • If you want extreme definition and high-shine, layer glass 01 over any of the products in this collection.

Curl:

  • Always blot hair dry gently.  Never rub it back-and-forth with a towel – that roughs up the cuticle and causes frizz.
  • For an easy way to give curls natural definition, take random sections of hair, twist around your finger and air-dry.
  • To de-frizz and add body to curls or waves, blend ringlet 07 and contour 08 in your palms, apply to damp hair and diffuse dry.

Straight

  • Apply Straight products to damp hair and blow-dry.  Flat-iron for extra-straight results.
  • Flat-iron small, thin sections of hair – not big chunks.  That way, heat will be distributed evenly and results will be smoother.
  • When blow-drying, always point the nozzle downward.  It helps smooth the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair shaft), so hair looks sleek and shiny.
  • For tough-to-straighten hair, smooth align 12 on damp hair, blow-dry, then mist spray starch 15 on sections and flat-iron.

Volume

  • Apply Volume products to damp hair and blow-dry for maximum body.

  • When you’re blow-drying, use a large round brush to direct hair upward – directing hair away from the root creates extra volume and lift.
  • For bouncy waves, apply full frame 07 to damp hair and blow-dry.  Set dry hair on large Velcro rollers and blow-dry with a diffuser for five minutes.  Let hair cool, unroll and gently finger comb.
  • Double up on products to boost volume.  When hair is damp, apply guts 10 to roots for lift, then smooth thickening lotion 06 on the mid-shaft and ends to plump up strands.

Heat Styling:

  • Make sure your hair is completely dry before using a flat-iron, curling iron or hot rollers – wet hair is more fragile and vulnerable to damage.
  • For long-lasting defined curls, apply crystal curls 06 to damp hair and diffuse-dry.  Then mist hot sets 22 on small sections and curl with a medium-barrel curling iron to re-shape and define curls.
  • For silky straight hair, apply align 12 to damp hair and blow-dry.  Spray fabricate 03 on sections and flat-iron for a touchable weightless finish.
  • For tough-to-straighten hair, smooth align 12 on damp hair, blow-dry, then mist spray starch 15 on small sections and flat-iron to add long-lasting control.
