No matter your hair type or texture, we’re willing to bet you’ve had to deal with frizzy hair at some point or another. And when it comes to fighting frizzy hair, there’s no shortage of options available…all of which are very different. So, we asked Redken Artist Lindsey Olson to weigh in on the pros and cons of two common options: In one corner, in-salon keratin treatments, in the other, at-home frizz-fighting products. Read on to learn more about both.
IN-SALON KERATIN TREATMENTS
This frizzy hair treatment isn’t new, though it continues to be a popular option for many. The in-salon service can sometimes involve a formaldehyde-releasing solution (which is applied to your hair before it’s blow-dried and flat-ironed) that completely straightens your hair, smoothing down any frizzy hair along with it. The end result is super, super sleek—and is going to stay like that for several months. While some people appreciate that type of semi-permanence, it does mean that you’ll be limited in how you can style your hair afterward, notes Olson. Keep in mind that you also can’t wash your hair for a few days after and will have to be cautious about the types of products you use.

At-Home Frizz-Fighting Products
The main difference between these treatments and using an at-home haircare system comes down to versatility. “With keratin treatments, you’ll have a smooth and sleek result, but won’t be able to embrace your natural texture if you ever want to change it up,” points out Olson. “By using products designed to fight frizzy hair, you can still have waves or volume or curls…without all the frizz,” she adds. The best products for frizzy hair from Redken? Olson is a fan of both the anti-humidity, smoothing Frizz Dismiss line and the All Soft and All Soft Mega lines, which pack a hefty hit of moisture, a key component in your fight against frizzy hair.
Start your smoothing routine in the shower with a shampoo and conditioner, like the Frizz Dismiss Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Frizz Dismiss Conditioner. Then, use a leave-in treatment, like the Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame Leave-In Smoothing Control Cream, which tames frizzy hair and helps provide heat protection. Finish with a frizz serum, like the Instant Deflate Leave-In Smoothing Serum. When used with the Frizz Dismiss shampoo and conditioner, the smoothing serum reduces frizz, adds shine, and works well on either dry or wet hair. Cocktailing products like this helps you manage frizzy hair from start to finish in your styling routine. Plus, if you do want to go curly or wavy the next day, just wash them out and you’re good to go! You won’t be able to do that with a keratin treatment.
