In the world of haircare, very few topics are as highly debated as how often you should wash your hair. Everyone has an opinion. Too much cleansing is said to dry out the strands, while too little can lead to product buildup on your roots. To end the debate once and for all, we went straight to the experts.
Redken Artist Veronica Vasilevsky spent over a decade working as a hair stylist and understands the importance of proper haircare and cleansing maintenance. When it comes to the great shampoo debate, Vasilevsky has her own expert opinion on how often we should be washing our strands.
FOR VIRGIN HAIR, LESS IS MORE
“For those with non-color treated hair, I always think less is better for styling ease and body. I prefer my own hair on day two and three actually,” says Vasilevsky.
“However, some might say that their hair gets too greasy and feel the need to wash it every day. I feel that the more you wash the hair, the more it needs to be washed. So for non-color treated hair, I recommend you wash it every other day.”
On non-shampoo days, another option for color-treaded hair is dry shampoo. This holy grail product is perfect for soaking up excess oils at the scalp and refreshing your hairstyles. It’s amazing for those days when you need to skip the suds.

CONSIDER YOUR COLOR
When it comes to washing color-treated hair, Vasilevsky says that there are a few different factors that you should consider when adjusting your shampooing frequency.
For instance, Vasilevsky says if your hair that has been overly lightened (looking at you, platinum blondes) you should shampoo less often in order to reap the most benefits from the hair’s natural oils. Lightened hair is typically drier, so you need those natural oils to replenish your strands. If those oils get removed, then the hair dries out. Even if you are shampooing less, you should still be brushing your hair daily. The simple act of brushing your strands can help spread the oils from your scalp to the rest of your strands. This helps to keep your hair naturally moisturized from root-to-tip.
To keep that haircolor looking fresh in between shampoos, reach for gentle co-washes or dry shampoos to maintain healthy-looking locks. Co-washes are a great cleansing option for color-treated hair as they often don’t contain the harsh lather than can dry out hair. Instead, co-washes contain more nourishing properties to make sure that your hair is hydrated throughout.
When you do use shampoo, opt for a color-safe version. Color-safe shampoos help to protect the hair while you shower so that your color fades less overtime. It’s a must-have for anyone with colored hair.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE STEAM
If still you tend to notice a lot of fading in your haircolor or excessive dryness, Vasilevsky explained it may actually be the temperature of your shower rather than your shampoo causing the color to dull.
Even though steamy showers sound perfect at the end of a long day, hot water can actually cause your haircolor to fade over time. Too much heat can leave the hair feeling dry and damaged, which can allow color molecules to seep out of the hair shaft. How crazy is that?
