HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR HAIRCARE ROUTINE TO SPRING

Spring is officially in bloom. And as the season changes, so does your hair. The shift in the weather can cause simultaneous shifts in your scalp and strands, which means you’ll have to transition your haircare routine to give both exactly what they need.

DRY SHAMPOO IS A MUST-HAVE

You might notice that your hair is suddenly greasier than it was all winter long, and the increased humidity in the air is to blame. “The most common concern during this time is dealing with excess grease,” says Redken artist Kyle Pinneo. “We produce more oil in the winter months to help protect against the dry harsh environment and when we transition into spring and things aren’t as dry, it takes our bodies a while to transition as well.”

The best way to target this, he says, is with dry shampoo like Redken Deep Clean Dry Shampoo. And the best way to use it? “Apply it to clean hair to help prevent it from getting greasy in the first place, rather applying it after your hair is already greasy.” He also suggests applying it before bed as a way to absorb any scalp sweat that might occur while you’re sleeping.

INTEGRATE A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO

Another way to treat your spring-induced greasy scalp is with your regular shampoo routine.”When working with your shampoo and conditioner, remember to concentrate the shampoo at the scalp and target your ends and mid shaft with conditioner,” he says. And be sure to swap out your regular shampoo with Redken Detox Hair Cleansing Cream at least once or twice a month to really remove any product buildup and combat oil and grease on your scalp. “Detox Hair cleansing cream should be in everyone’s shower regardless of the season, but especially when transitioning from winter to spring to help remove excess oil,” he says. It’s great at removing all that product buildup. Plus it’s gentle enough for color-treated hair

TRY A LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER

If you find yourself dealing with the opposite problem—a dry scalp—you’ll want to double down on hydrating ingredients. Redken Artist Blake Reed Evans recommends applying Redken One United Multi-Benefit Leave-In Conditioner to your scalp, which provides conditioning and moisturizing ingredients. FOR CURLY, TEXTURED HAIR

Curly, textured hair tends to get drier than straight hair due to the fact that the natural oils from your scalp can’t make their way down the hair shaft as easily as they can with other hair types. Redken’s All Soft Mega Moisturizing Mask restores hydration to coarse hair thanks to a protein complex that provides 15 times more conditioning than a regular conditioner, and will leave it soft for up to three washes. For best results, pair it with All Soft Mega Shampoo and All Soft Mega Conditioner.

FOR WAVY HAIR

All of the humidity in the air can mean bad news for wavy hair that’s prone to frizz, and Redken’s Frizz Dismiss line can help. The Instant Deflate Oil-in-Serum, in particular, will protect against humidity and prevent any unwanted volume and puffiness. It’s made with sustainably sourced Babassu Oil, which will leave hair smooth, shiny, and easy to manage.

FOR FINE, STRAIGHT HAIR

To give fine hair a little extra oomph when it’s feeling flat from excess oil, apply Guts 10 on towel-dried hair after washing with Detox Hair Cleansing Cream and before you blow dry. It's lightweight and won’t weigh down your look, but will still give your roots a nice lift for added volume.

FOR DAMAGED HAIR

If your hair saw a few too many hot tools this winter, Redken's Extreme CAT Protein Reconstructing Hair Treatment Spray will help bring it back to its healthier, happier state. Spray it into your strands after Redken Extreme Hair Strengthening Shampoo and let it sit for 3-5 minutes to allow it to work its magic. It will reconstruct and condition your hair, add immediate strength, and help prevent breakage and split ends. It also helps protect your hair against future damage from chemical treatments and heat, so that once your hair is back to being healthy it will actually stay that way. Rinse it out, and follow with Redken Extreme Conditioner.
